National Friends of the Library Week

This week, October 16-22, has been dubbed National Friends of the Library Week by the American Library Association in order to celebrate Friends organizations across the nation who support our local libraries. If you’ve never heard of the Friends of the Library, now is the perfect time to learn more about them.

Who are the Friends of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library?
They are your neighbors, local volunteers and community leaders who support the library in order to maintain and expand its educational services. They are dedicated to the promotion of literacy and the betterment of the community. Anyone can become a member of the Friends of the Library by paying dues and/or making a donation. All donations are tax deductible because the Friends are a 501c(3) organization.

How do the Friends help the library?
Money raised by the Friends funds many different aspects of the library, including: early literacy programs for children, free classes, events and workshops for all ages, and enhancement of the collection and many other library services.

How do the Friends raise money for the library?
The majority of funds raised by the Friends comes from the annual spring and fall book sales held at Gordon Avenue Library, where the Friends’ office is also located. The sales consist of books, CDs, games, and other items donated by the community.

What rewards come with being a Friend of JMRL?
Being a “Friend” entitles you to voting privileges, subscription to the Among Friends newsletter, participation in special members-only events, and early access to the spring and fall book sales. It also comes with the satisfaction of knowing that you’re supporting the local library system’s educational efforts.

How can I learn more?
