Last month, winners were announced for the 100th year of the Pulitzer Prize. The centennial celebration focuses on all of the prize winners, both past and present, and the cultural value that the prize itself represents. In the past century, hundreds of books have been awarded the honor of the Pulitzer.

Nonfiction: Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS by Joby Warrick – Traces how the strain of militant Islam behind ISIS first arose under the leadership of terrorist mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and spread through the strategic mistakes of Presidents Bush and Obama.
Poetry: Ozone Journal by Peter Balakian – In this book, Peter Balakian aims at the bigger picture of humanity’s history of atrocity and trauma, but through short vignettes grounded in everyday situations, and in particular times and places.
