Epistolary Novels

skyeI’m sure you’ve read a novel that featured letters as part of the text but have you tried one that is written entirely in letters? Called epistolary novels, these titles are correspondence the whole way through. It makes for a unique reading experience.

Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher – This humorous book revolves around one dedicated, irate professor and his letter writing life. Letters of recommendation, letters of complaint, personal letters. It’s all here in this short, entertaining novel.

Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn- What would happen if the government slowly curtailed your use of the alphabet, one letter at a time? That subject is what this brief novel tackles through letters between its main characters.

Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer- Just after World War II, writer Juliet Ashton finds inspiration for her next book after learning through letters from one of its residents about the British island of Guernsey  and the Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, a book club created as an alibi during the German occupation.

The Letters by Luanne Rice & Joseph Monninger – Follow one couple’s relationship from the beginning where they fall in love through the tragedy of losing an adult child.

Letters from Skye by Jessica Brockmole – This book begins during World War I and follows the love story between a poet on the Scottish Isle of Skye and an American volunteer ambulance driver for the French Army.
