Summer Reading Challenge 2015

Read to the RhythmJMRL will kick off a new summer reading program on June 1. The simplified program allows readers of all ages to participate. Simply pick up a challenge sheet at any branch or download from jmrl.org/summer. Complete four library-related challenges to win a prize each month. Turn in your sheet at any branch for a prize, and earn additional prizes with two more challenge sheets, all the way through August 31.

Prizes for children from birth to grade 5 include a JMRL bag (June), a book (July) and musical instrument (August). Prizes for teens in grades 6 to 12 are a JMRL stylus pen (June), a book (July), and a zipper pull kit (August). Adults will receive a free book all three months. Grand prizes will be drawn from entries for all participants after August 31; four children will receive gift cards to Barnes & Noble, two teens will receive Amazon gift cards, and a Kindle will be given away as the grand prize for adults.

For readers of all ages, the library has storytimes, book groups, craft programs, movies and events the whole family can enjoy. The theme this year is Read to the Rhythm, so enjoy jazz, music by the Charlottesville Municipal band and open mic nights. Learn to swing dance, break dance and folk dance, too. All of the library’s events are listed at jmrl.org.

Join the Central Library in kicking off the summer reading program on Saturday, June 6 at 10am until 12pm. Meet Richard Scarry’s Hucklecat, swing to the sounds of the Dixieland Band, snack on popcorn and donuts, and get a fresh-made balloon animal to take home. Don’t miss the face painting or the chance to check out the Friends’ mini book sale, and don’t forget to pick up your challenge sheet.
