Welcoming Week 2019

WGC - Welcoming Week 19 - Flier-page-001Celebrate Greater Charlottesville’s diversity, starting this Friday!

From September 13-22, Charlottesville will be the home of Welcoming Week, where numerous events throughout the area will aim to bring together immigrants, refugees, and native-born residents to raise awareness of the benefits of welcoming everyone.

Events include films, health screenings, cultural celebrations, panel discussions, and more!

JMRL will be hosting events in conjunction with Welcoming Week. Here are just a few:

  • Laughing Dragon Kung Fu: Friday, September 13 at 4pm (Northside Library)

o   Traditional Chinese dragon dance, followed by a traditional southern Chinese lion dance.

  • “Walk 6000 Miles in My Shoes”: A Refugee Resettlement Simulation        Experience: Monday, September 16 at 6-8pm (Northside Library):

o    Experience the resettlement process through a live-action role-play simulation and reflective group discussion. Ages 14+. Registration required at www.jmrl.org

  • On Her Shoulders: Thursday, September 19 at 6:30pm (Central Library)

o   Documentary film about Nadia Murad who survived genocide and sexual slavery committed by ISIS.

  • An Immigrant’s Story with Sonia Nazario: Wednesday, September 18 at 1pm

(Northside Library)

o   Pulitzer Prize winner Sonia Nazario discusses her National Bestseller, Enrique’s Journey, and its incredible relevance to the experiences of immigrants and unaccompanied minors seeking safety in the U.S. today.
