Spreading Good Cheer

Crafts, swaps, good deeds, sweet treats, and more seasonal fun at your library! We’ve rounded up all the reasons to be jolly—programs and events for kids, teens, and adults across JMRL in December. Read on for the highlights at each branch!

Celebrate generosity and great bakes at Central Library’s 2nd Annual For Goodness Bakes event on Sunday, Dec. 10, 2-4pm. Bring a batch of your best homemade cookies to enter in the Cookie Competition, and sample other contestants’ confections before casting your vote.  Registration is not required, but greatly appreciated. To participate in the Cookie Competition, please indicate your interest on the registration form.

Support the Shelter for Help in Emergency by bringing items to donate. Be sure to check this list to know what items to bring! There are also MORE options for item donations; email Abby at adavis@jmrl.org for the FULL list. 

Check out more seasonal fun at Central Library this month: Polar Express Storytime & Movie, No School Movies, Brownies!, Cocoa & Paint Party, Family Friendly Silent Disco, and After Hours Silent Disco.


On Wednesday, Dec. 6, 4pm, Studio for the Performing Arts presents excerpts of The Nutcracker, danced by students of Albemarle Ballet Theatre, and a reading of the story by E.T.A. Hoffman. This presentation for all ages will include performances in beautiful costumes and a chance for audience members to learn steps from the ballet!

Get festive at Crozet Library with more programs for children, teens, and adults! Winter Fae Court, Heifiez Chamber Music Concert, Moss-Some Holiday Terrariums, and A Colorful Cookie Storytime.


Friday, Dec. 8, 5:30-7pm: Break out a sweater and prepare to get ugly! We’ll be making our own ugly sweaters, devouring seasonal treats, and chilling with our favorite games. Yule regret not coming! Sweaters will be provided for anyone who needs one.

Tuesday, Dec. 12, 4-6pm: Teens (ages 11 and up) are invited to drop in at the library between 4 and 6pm to make hot chocolate ornaments and holiday cards.

Stop by Nelson Memorial Library anytime on Wednesday, Dec. 13 for the 3rd Annual Holiday Craft Day, and create a holiday craft.

Saturday, Dec. 16, 2-4pm: Come play BINGO and win books, great for gifts or to add to your collection. For school age children and adults.

Tired of your old decorations? Find something new through the spirit of sharing! Donate new or gently used decorations and get something new to you.* Accepting: lights, ornaments, wreaths, crafts, artificial trees (4.5ft or smaller only), and more! Here’s how it works:  Drop Off items between Wednesday, Nov. 1 and Tuesday, Nov. 21 at Northside Library.

Swap Meet is on Thursday, Dec. 7, 6:30-8:30pm.

*Donations are not required to participate in the swap meet.

Drop by the library on Saturday, Dec. 9th anytime between 10am and 3pm to make one—or more!—winter crafts during the library’s Annual Craft Fair. This program is a collaboration with SCAN‘s Scottsville Town Holiday event.
