The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) has announced the top 10 teen titles of 2016. 28,000 teens from all over the globe voted for the following books as this year’s best young adult novels. You can check out any of these titles at your nearby library:
- Alive by Chandler Baker – After receiving a heart transplant, 17-year-old Stella’s recovery is marred with strange side effects and hallucinations, and when she meets new classmate Levi, Stella soon realizes that they have more in common than she could ever imagine.
- All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven – Meeting on the ledge of their school’s bell tower, misfit Theodore Finch and suicidal Violet Markey find acceptance and healing that are overshadowed by Finch’s fears about Violet’s growing social world.
- The Game of Love and Death by Martha Brockenbrough – In Seattle in 1937 two 17-year-olds, Henry, who is white, and Flora, who is African-American, become the unwitting pawns in a game played by two immortal figures, Love and Death, where they must choose each other at the end, or one of them will die.
- Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo – Six dangerous outcasts must learn to work together after they are offered an impossible heist that can save the world from destruction.
- Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon – A girl confined to her house by rare and profound allergies falls hopelessly in love with her new neighbor, in a story told through vignettes, diary entries, texts, charts, lists and illustrations.
- Every Last Word by Tamara Ireland Stone – Coping with Purely-Obsessional OCD, high-school junior Samantha McAllister learns to accept herself and take control of her life through her experiences in poetry club.
- The Novice (Summoner Series, Book One) by Taran Matharu – Discovering his rare ability to summon demons from another world, blacksmith’s apprentice Fletcher practices his skills at a magical academy where he prepares to serve his Empire in the war against the Orcs.
- Illuminae by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff – Caught in the crossfire of a megacorporation rivalry in 2575, Kady and Ezra, who have just broken up, flee their home planet on an evacuation ship that is quickly overwhelmed by a fast-spreading plague.
- When by Victoria Laurie – 16-year-old Maddie Flynn cannot help but see the death date of everyone she meets or sees in a photograph or on-screen, and her alcoholic mother exploits this by having her do readings for money, but when Maddie predicts the death of a young boy, she becomes the center of an FBI investigation.
- Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls by Lynn Weingarten – Refusing to believe that her best friend and soulmate, Delia, committed suicide, June reflects on the fateful night a year earlier that culminated in what she believes was Delia’s murder.
