Best Graphic Novels for 2014

If you’ve never checked out a graphic novel before and are looking for a good place to start, the following books are from the list of 2014 Top Ten Graphic Novels for Teens by the Young Adult Library Services Association and are available at through the JMRL catalog:

Will & Whit by Laura Lee Gulledge – Wilhelmina “Will” Huxstep – a creative soul struggling to come to terms with a family tragedy – crafts whimsical lamps, in part to deal with her fear of the dark, which she is forced to confront when a hurricane blows through her town at the end of a summer.

The Adventures of Superhero Girl by Faith Erin Hicks – Presents the adventures of Superhero Girl, who struggles with her everyday life, battling monsters and aliens, and snarky comments from Skeptical Guy.

Dogs of War by Sheila Keenan – A graphic novel tribute to the contributions of heroic military canines during World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War includes three stories inspired by historic battles and actual military practices that detail the shared experiences of soldiers and service dogs.

Mind MGMT by Matt Kindt – A young journalist researching the story of a commercial flight where everyone aboard lost their memories stumbles upon the top-secret Mind Management program.

Rust, Volume 2: Secrets of the Cell by Royden Lepp – When a second robot attack occurs on the Taylor farm, Oswald becomes increasingly suspicious of Jet’s connection to the robots as Jet tries to become closer to the family who is harboring him.

War Brothers: The Graphic Novel by Sharon E. McKay – The life of a child soldier is full of unthinkable violence … But the human capacity to connect with others and for survival is remarkable.
